Brooke Palmer
About The Author
Brooke Palmer was born in 1977 in Kansas City, Missouri, and acquired her Communications degree from the University of Missouri. She spent several years living and writing in different states (Washington, Montana, Kansas, Texas), then returned to KC in 2008 and bought a forever home there (here) where she currently resides with her husband Chris Stock, the occasional roommate, her free-roaming office mouse, and the memories of her former cats (RIP).
Brooke’s day job is to develop English Language Arts assessments for K-12 and adult students. Additionally, she has written columns, editorials, and articles for various newspapers (The Kansas City Star, San Antonio Current, The Pitch), magazines (Harder Beat), and virtual publications. She was one of three co-founders of the online literary magazine InvasiveThoughts.com (no longer available online), which featured literature from writers around the country and interviews of various authors, musicians, and artists, such as Nikki Giovani, Audrey Niffenegger, Corey Glover, and Sananda Maitreya, to name a few.
Brooke’s journey as a writer began early, and her elementary years were spent with a near-permanent blister on her pencil finger. In middle and high school, she was privileged to have attended Kansas City’s Magnet School of Fine and Performing Arts—Paseo Academy—where her passions for creative writing and social justice were fueled by her school’s model of integration and democracy in general and by the inspiring instruction and support of her Creative Writing teacher, Judith Thies Roberts, in particular. While in high school, she was honored to be one of three students whose poems were selected and read by Maya Angelou at her Kansas City lecture at the Unitarian Temple on the Plaza (1995).
When not working, writing, or resting, Brooke is reading myriad books or the newspaper, listening to her local community radio programs and NPR, spending time with family and friends, taking walks, sleeping in, eating Chris’s cooking, making music with Chris, drinking lots of loose-leaf tea, drinking wine, listening to vinyl records cranked up, burning candles and incense (outside!), taking magical spa baths, immersing in nature, exercising with her gals at NickiFit, going to the movies, going to concerts, traveling (locally and internationally), trying unsuccessfully to avoid excessive sweets and junk food, and thinking up new creative projects, two-thirds of which come to fruition. Oh, and she’s interested in collaborating with other writers, artists, and thinkers! So reach out via the Contact page, or directly at [email protected].
